What we believe

The ultimate authority for our beliefs comes from God’s Word to us in the Bible. In it we find out the truth about God, ourselves, and how we can have a relationship with Him.

The Anglican Church holds to the teachings of the early and apostolic church, which are described in historic creeds and explained generally in the 'Thirty-nine Articles of Religion'. Our prayer books also contain some of our core beliefs.

Here is one of the creeds we often use in our services, the “Apostles’ Creed”, which covers the essentials of the Christian faith:

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic* church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. AMEN.

* 'catholic' is simply a term meaning 'universal' - it means the worldwide body of all true Christians, regardless of denomination. This is different from the 'Roman Catholic Church', which is one particular denomination.
